The evil "Them"
The Music Industry
When a musician makes a song, they give it to a company to publish it. The company will then purchase the song and all rights to it, this means that the song is now owned by the company.
This company will then produce the CD's/Tapes/LP's/etc with the songs that they own on them and will sell them to various shops, where people will purchase them. In this way the money you pay when you purchase a track gets filtered up through various people.
Generally the artist will recieve payment for the song at a fixed rate, this will be a very small payment compared to how much money the company makes on the song. Very little of the money you pay for a CD reaches the artist - most of it goes to the company that owns the rights to the song.
These companies generally group together in to various Asscocations, most countries have a Recording Industry Association of some kind, this is a group of companies who combine their power and wealth to give them more power when they want to bully people.
The Film Industry
Unlike the music industry the film industry actually make the films themselves. However they are just as bad at paying the actors.
When they make films they then diistrbute them to various cinemas for their initial income (which normally covers the cost of making the film, plus a nice profit in their pockets).
After a while they then sell the films to companies who make DVD's and Video avalible. They then make a load more money from that (and they have already payed for the cost of making the film, so it all goes in to their pockets.)
Eventually the films get sold to various TV Companies just to make some more money - although the profit from this is not as good as the other distribution methods.
Who are they?
Well, there are different Music and Film industries in each country, but some of the more well known ones are:
Recording Industry Association of America - The ones who get most publicity, as most of the bullshit going on is coming out of america.
Motion Picture Association of America - The Film version of the RIAA.
British Record Industry's trade association. - The British Recording Insudtry
The Federation Against Copyright Theft - Also known as "Fact" - perhaps they should have told their web designers this? they forgot to include some on their site.
